July 13: Mature Needs
Today I realize that part of maturity is to accept that I cannot
necessarily have everything just the way I want it. The thought that I
should be able to act out everything in adulthood that I wasn't able to
as a child just doesn't work. When children's needs go unmet, they carry
into adulthood a desire to have all of their needs catered to. This is
the stuff of co-dependent, problematic relationships. To be aware of
one's needs is what is important. From this intelligence, mature
decisions can be made. Because I am aware of my needs does not
necessarily mean that someone else has to meet them or that I have a
right to expect them to. Negating another person's presence will do
nothing to enhance my own.
I am ready to grow up.
When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I
thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.
