While the ingestion of alcohol is, by definition, necessary to develop alcoholism, the use of alcohol does not predict the development of alcoholism. It is estimated that 9% of the general population is pre disposed to alcoholism based on genetic factors. The quantity, frequency and regularity of alcohol consumption required to develop alcoholism varies greatly from person to person. In addition, although the biological mechanisms underpinning alcoholism are uncertain, some risk factors.

Take your 9% as accurate, multiply by the population and figure of all those people, few seek help and of those that actually go to a 12 step meeting or rehab, less than 5% find any long term contented sobriety.

Really hikes my gratitude for being on of the fortunate ones. My mother never drank, nor did my grand mother. Wonder if they were drunks or just married to good alcoholics who never sought recovery. Drinking alcoholically (as we view it today) was socially acceptable back through the 60's!

Hope you find "recovered" if you haven't!
