cut and paste 12 steps
Posted On 09/22/2007 13:18:52

When you need them in a hurry :-)

Step 1 - We admitted we were powerless over our addiction - that our lives had become unmanageable
Step 2 - Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity
Step 3 - Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood God
Step 4 - Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves
Step 5 - Admitted to God, to ourselves and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs
Step 6 - Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character
Step 7 - Humbly asked God to remove our shortcomings
Step 8 - Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all
Step 9 - Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others
Step 10 - Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it
Step 11 - Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood God, praying only for knowledge of God's will for us and the power to carry that out
Step 12 - Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to other addicts, and to practice these principles in all our affairs

Lest We Forget ...
Posted On 09/03/2007 10:04:11

Remember the last Monday holiday you faced while using? I know its not pleasant but its important to help enjoy being clean. For example, today's weather in Pittsburgh is absolutely, unequivocally gorgeous. I got up early, made coffee, took a leisurely shower, and had breakfast. Now when I was an active junkie, the first thing entering me mind upon waking would be "did I save any?" For 20 years the answer has been no but hope springs eternal. Now a Monday holiday has many effects on me copping ability. Is the dope man out at a a picnic? What stores are open? Can I unload the stuff I boosted?

Of course the reason we picked up two bundles yesterday was so we we would have some today, didn't we? Now it comes back. We did them all ?!?!? NOOOO, it can't BE! Well, maybe there are some in the corners. At least enough to stave off sickness? F**K, better get some clothes on and head to the mall.

THANK GOD things are so so so different in recovery. Enjoy today the right way, like your Higher Power intended it.

The Snake Model
Posted On 08/26/2007 09:50:24

The Differential Theory of Special Operations Forces

(Snake Model)

Upon encountering a snake in the Area of Operation (AO):

* Paratrooper: Kills the snake. (See me gallery, I was an American para for 6 years.)

* Armor: Runs over snake, giggles, and looks for more snakes.

* Infantry: "Look, a putty cat. Come 'ere kitty . . . Ouch! Hey, that's not a kitty cat."

* Infantry (alt): "Ugh! Me see snake. Me like snake. Ouch! Me no like snake."

* Army Aviation: Has GPS grid to snake. Couldn't find snake. Back to base for crew rest and the club and some sort of drink called "The Snake"

* Ranger: Plays with the snake, then eats it.

* Ranger (alt): Assaults the snake's home and secures it for use by friendly snakes.

* SEAL: Expends all ammunition, several grenades and calls for naval gunfire in a failed attempt to kill the snake. The snake bites the SEAL then retreats to safety.

* Corps Artillery: Kills snake, but in the process kills several hundred civilians with a massive TOT with three FA BDEs in support. Mission is considered a success and all participants are awarded Silver Stars. (Cooks, Mechanics, Legal Clerks etc.)

* Marine Recon: Follows the snake and gets lost

* Combat Controller: Guides the snake elsewhere.

* Pararescue: Wounds the snake in first encounter, then feverishly works to save the snake's life.

* Special Forces: Makes contact with the snake, builds rapport, wins its heart and mind, then trains it to kill other snakes.

Vaguely Cool Redux
Posted On 08/15/2007 16:21:13

Somehow, I messed up me previous blog. Anyhow, I walked to the Shiloh meeting last night with me two house mates. Now, it would be tough to find 3 men with such widely diverse backgrounds. The common threads being we are all in recovery, all vets, and live together in an excellent VA house for old commandos who lost their way in life.
